Campsite Reviews: Jim Hogg Park
Jimm Hogg Park is a state park nestled in near Georgetown, TX. The scenery on the drive in is spectacular, and we enjoyed the lakefront views from our campsite.
What to Expect
Jim Hogg Park is located about 45 minutes northwest of Austin, TX, and only a few minutes from grocery stores, gas, and plenty of other shopping in Georgetown, TX. The park is located on Lake Georgetown and is run by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. We came during the 2018 government shutdown, but were happily surprised to find out that the park wasn’t affected by the shutdown.
Jim Hogg Park has 148 back-in campsites with water and 50-amp electrical hookups, mostly level parking pads, covered table, fire ring with grill cover, and separate barbecue grills with covers. There is a dump station on-site, as well as showers and flush toilets.
Jim Hogg Park’s campsites could be considered an amenity on their own. The site we were in (site #32) was right next to the lake and provided gorgeous sunrise and sunset views. It is also one of the more spacious sites, along with one of a few sites having a trail with direct access to the lake for fishing / activities. There is a lot of opportunity for fishing, boating, hiking or biking on the 26 mile San Gabriel River Trail, and even hunting small game with a permit.
There is a Randalls grocery store a few minutes up the road, along with plenty of options for food and entertainment near by. There’s a cool looking place called Inner Space Cavern only 20 minutes away, although we didn’t get a chance to go ourselves, the reviews online look like it’s a lot of fun for $22. We end up grabbing some food at Hardtails Bar and Grill despite some mediocre reviews on Yelp and Google because we wanted to enjoy some live music, and we weren’t disappointed. The burger was good, the chicken dish was well seasoned, and their dip trio hit the spot. The live band that was on was very entertaining, and we left feeling full and happy.
We enjoyed our time at Jim Hogg Park! The gorgeous views and spacious campsite made for a great stay. The amount of nature right outside our window was a refreshing reminder of what we chose this lifestyle.
